Release: Black Sea
Outro release que escrevi foi para o pessoal do Black Sea, de Curitiba. Lembro que a ideia era divulgar a banda para outros veículos que não somente para os sites e revistas de metal, então no texto procurei ser o mais didático possível, explicando o que era o tal do post-metal e tentando convencer o leitor a quebrar a barreira e descobrir um estilo diferente dentro do metal. Fiz em inglês e português:

Contrary to the hundreds of heavy metal sub-genres, post-metal is relatively unknown in Brazil. Heading acts like Rosetta, Cult of Luna, Isis or Pelican are kept aside as a specific niche known to few, and not rarely being tagged as just-another-metal-band. We may list about three or four post-metal acts in Brazil. And perhaps Black Sea is the most renowned one.
The band’s background is somewhat short. Having banded in Curitiba (PR) in 2008, they released their first album — It’s All About Our Silence — in 2009, with a few concerts around the southern part of Brazil. The album caused good impressions for some specialized sites like Post-Rock.ro, Postrocking.com and PostRockXchange.com. By year-end, they were featured in II Sinewave Festival in São Paulo, together with five other bands from the same label. They spent the year of 2010 playing concerts and writing new material for their sophomore effort, having played it live at III Sinewave Festival in their hometown Curitiba, in early 2011. They were also featured as “Band of the Week” by Terrorizer magazine website. Their résumé is short, but they have a great artistic highlight — the lack of heavy metal standards. Their Myspace “top friends” says it — Russian Circles, Mastodon, Neurosis, the aforementioned Rosetta, Isis, Pelican, all bands not very frequent in the traditional heavy metal album lists.
Somethings Cannot Be Mirrored, the album, features six long tracks, merging light ambient soundscapes with dense heaviness. “300ml”, the first track, sums it all — a calm ethereal riff with guitars in delay and martial drums paves the way to an utmost strength in 3/4 compass. Minutes ahead we may find a good definition of the whole genre — heavy drums, roaring vocals, guitars building a harmonic field with reverb and delay. Another fine example: the atmosphere of “Dogs of War”, the last track, way into its six minutes — a bass riff, a light guitar line, strong drums, some windy effects, fade out. Amazing soundscapes hard to be mirrored.

Somethings Cannot Be Mirrored
A chance de você ter ouvido falar em post-metal é pequena.
Diferente das centenas de sub-gêneros do metal (speed, black, nü, aquela lista toda), o post-metal é pouquíssimo divulgado no Brasil. Juntando referências de rock experimental, post-rock, industrial, prog e heavy metal, o post-metal é um gênero que vem ganhando forças no exterior, com bandas como Rosetta, Cult of Luna, Isis e Pelican à frente. Algumas das características: andamentos mais lentos, climas atmosféricos, texturas, ênfase no instrumental, poucos vocais.
No Brasil dá pra contar umas três bandas nessa linha. E talvez o Black Sea seja a maior delas.
A história da banda ainda é curta. Surgiram em Curitiba (PR) em 2008, lançaram um álbum — It’s All About Our Silence — em 2009, e fizeram diversos shows pela região sul. O álbum teve bastante destaque em sites especializados como Post-Rock.ro, Postrocking.com, PostRockXchange.com. No final do ano, foram até São Paulo tocar no II Sinewave Festival, ao lado de cinco outras bandas lançadas pelo selo. Passaram o ano de 2010 fazendo mais shows, até gravarem um novo trabalho e apresentá-lo no III Sinewave Festival, em Curitiba, no início de 2011. Ganharam destaque no site TramaVirtual e um artigo como “Band of the Week” no site da revista inglesa Terrorizer. A história é curta, mas eles têm um grande diferencial artístico — a fuga do padrão. A lista de “top friends” do Myspace entrega — Russian Circles, Mastodon, Neurosis, as já citadas Rosetta, Isis, Pelican, todas bandas semi-desconhecidas do público tradicional de heavy metal.
Somethings Cannot Be Mirrored, o disco, traz seis faixas, todas longas, alternando viagens climáticas com peso e densidade. “300ml”, a faixa inicial, resume bem o álbum: um riff calmo e etéreo com guitarras em delay e uma bateria marcial dá lugar a um peso em compasso 3/4. Lá no meio da faixa dá pra ouvir uma bela definição do gênero — base pesada, vocais guturais, guitarras fazendo uma cama harmônica com reverb e delay. Outro bom exemplo: o clima atmosférico de “Dogs of War”, a última faixa do disco, lá pelos seis minutos — um riff de baixo, uma guitarra leve e etérea, a bateria marcante, efeito de ventania, fade out. Belos climas difíceis de serem espelhados.
